Very branched shrub, with a robust herbaceous appearance, up to 2-4 m
tall, with woody stems at the base, and abundant persistent foliage.
It has large dark green leaves up to 50-60 cm long, supported by tough
petioles 10-20 cm long, often winged and with two small auricles near
the base.

They are pinnatilobulate, with 4-5 irregular segments on each side,
ovate to lanceolate, with a serrated or divided margin, generally
pointed, with a toothed margin, rough upper side and pubescent
underside, the two lower ones being narrower and pointing downwards.
Its flowers are grouped in showy yellow flower heads, 5-6 cm in
diameter, on hairy peduncles 2-7 cm long, and arranged in highly
branched panicles, up to 1 m long.
The flower heads consist of an
involucre with 8-13 bracts arranged in two series, ovate to lanceolate,
a disc with radial white ligulate flowers, rounded or tridentate at the
apex, and a central circle of tubular flowers, green at first and yellow
later.
