When ripe, they produce numerous achenes about 3 mm long, obovate to quadrangular, compressed, blackish in colour and containing a single seed.
It flowers spectacularly from May to June, although in very favourable locations this period is much longer.
It can be reproduced by seed or cuttings.

This plant is native to Mexico, having naturalised in regions as far from its origin as South Africa and Australia. It is used as an ornamental in many countries around the world.
It is easy to grow, requiring only a mild climate, sunny or part shade exposure, well-drained soil and watering during the drier months.
