Species native to South Africa, often used in gardening to form clumps. Also as a pot plant. And the flowers are sold in florists' shops as cut flowers, which can be used to make elegant and very decorative bouquets.
In gardening it requires very little care. It prefers rich soil and abundant watering, and can live in full sun or shade.

If planted in pots or containers, it is important not to use containers that are too large, as this will encourage a lot of branching, which in turn will reduce the number of flowers.
The subspecies orientalis is prized for being sun and heat resistant and long flowering, and is a favourite plant in Australia for landscaping roadsides and other public areas.
Numerous hybrids and cultivars have been developed from the parent plant, producing white, violet, shaded flowers, etc.
