Native to southern Africa, it is used as an ornamental practically all
over the world. They are vigorous-growing perennials, highly prized for
their lush foliage and showy, deep blue flowers.

It is a herbaceous perennial, rhizomatous plant, which produces a bunch
of basal leaves up to 60 cm long and 5-7 cm wide, ribbon-shaped,
canaliculate, arched, pointed, smooth or sparsely puberulent.
It has
blue flowers, grouped in large umbels that can have up to more than 100
flowers each, supported by a flowering stem up to more than 1 m long.
The whitish to deep blue flowers are about 4-5 long, with short tubular
tepal bases, spreading lobes, fine texture and wavy margins. Stamen and
style included.
The fruits are globose black capsules about 2 cm in
diameter.
Flowering occurs mainly in spring and summer. It reproduces
by seed and by division of the rhizome.
