There are generally two dormant periods: a long one in late autumn and winter, and a shorter one during the height of the summer heat. The start of summer is more difficult to predict, and over-watering in late summer can lead to root rot.

These succulents can be grown from seed, but the seeds can be difficult to germinate (or even to find). They are usually propagated from cuttings. This can be tricky because of the sap they exude.
