La Graciosa
La Graciosa is a Spanish island belonging to the
province of Las Palmas, in the autonomous community of the Canary Islands.
It forms part of the Chinijo archipelago, together with the islets of
Montaña Clara, Roque del Este, Roque del Oeste and Alegranza; all of these
form part of the municipality of Teguise, the main part of which is situated
on Lanzarote. The island’s economy is based primarily on tourism.La Graciosa lies to the north of Lanzarote, the island on which it depends administratively and from which it is separated by a strait known as El Río, which is just over a kilometre wide at its narrowest point. It is also relatively close to the African mainland.
La Graciosa covers an area of around 29 km², on which the island’s only two villages are situated: Caleta del Sebo and Pedro Barba. With a population of 718, it is the least populated of the eight inhabited islands. Apart from the built-up areas of these two settlements, the rest of the island is part of the State’s heritage, and its management falls under the remit of the Autonomous Body for National Parks.
On 26 June 2018, the Senate’s General Commission for the Autonomous Communities unanimously approved a motion recognising La Graciosa as the eighth inhabited island of the Canary Islands, meaning it is no longer considered an islet. However, this measure does not place it on an equal footing with the rest of the islands in the archipelago, as La Graciosa continues to belong to the Lanzarote municipality of Teguise.
