Scandix pecten-veneris L.
ssp. brachycarpa (Guss.) Thell.

APIACEAE
Aguja de pastor
Scandix pecten-veneris ssp. brachycarpa is a subspecies of the
annual plant commonly known as Venus’s comb or shepherd’s needle,
belonging to the Apiaceae family.
This particular subspecies is
botanically notable for the morphology of its fruits. Whilst the
nominate species (Scandix pecten-veneris) is characterised by fruits
bearing an extremely long beak resembling a needle or comb, the
brachycarpa subspecies (whose epithet literally means ‘short fruit’)
develops fruits that are noticeably shorter in comparison.
It is an
annual herb with slender, branched stems that usually reach between 15
and 50 cm in height. Its leaves are deeply divided (bi- or tripinnately
dissected) into linear segments.
It bears inflorescences in small
umbels with 1 to 3 rays, with markedly unequal white petals (the outer
ones being larger).
It grows wild mainly in ruderal areas, along
roadsides, on wasteland and in cultivated fields (as a weed).
Although it has a multi-regional distribution across the Mediterranean
basin, within Spain it has notable populations in the Canary Islands
(where it is considered a probable introduced species), and is formally
listed in the Canary Islands Biodiversity Database.
