Pimpinella dendrotragium is a perennial
herbaceous plant or small shrub endemic to the islands of Tenerife and
La Palma, in the Canary Islands archipelago. It belongs to the Apiaceae
family and is commonly known as ‘perejil cabruno’ or ‘culantrillo’.
It grows as a small perennial shrub with a distinctly woody stem,
typically reaching a height of between 30 and 40 centimetres.
Its
basal leaves are once-pinnate, completely glabrous (hairless) and have
ovate, petiolate segments with a finely crenate-serrated margin.
As
is characteristic of the Apiaceae family, its flowers are white and
grouped in striking umbels. Its flowering season mainly takes place
between April and June.
It is a botanical gem of the Macaronesian
flora, inhabiting summit areas and crags on its native islands, and is
closely related to other species of the same genus found exclusively in
the Canary Islands, such as Pimpinella cumbrae and Pimpinella
anagodendron.
