Ammodaucus nanocarpus (commonly known as the Canarian sand carrot) is a small annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Apiaceae family.
It is a delicate, small plant, reaching up to 20 cm in height, with glabrous (hairless) stems that are finely striated and highly branched from the base.
The leaves are light green to greyish-green, bi- or tri-pinnate (with linear or thread-like segments) and slightly fleshy, with petioles widening towards the base.
It bears small umbels with 2 to 8 rays; the flowers are minute (2 to 4 mm), white or whitish-purple in colour, with deciduous petals and persistent sepals.
They measure between 4 and 8 mm, are compressed, straw-coloured or yellowish, and are covered with hairs or long bristles.
It generally flowers between March and April.
It is a Macaronesian–North African endemic species found in the Canary Islands (on the islands of Tenerife and Fuerteventura) and in arid areas along the south-western coast of Morocco.
It grows on sandy terrain, coastal areas, arid inland regions and fields of recent lava flows or malpaís with some soil.
