Alisma lanceolatum, commonly known as narrow-leaved water
plantain or water plantain, is a species of aquatic plant belonging to
the Alismataceae family. It grows in damp areas, along riverbanks, in
ponds, irrigation ditches and flooded land. Its leaves emerge from
the base and are characterised by a distinctly lanceolate (spear-shaped)
form, which distinguishes it from other similar species within its genus
that have more rounded or elliptical leaves. It produces an erect,
branched inflorescence with small, three-petalled flowers, usually white
or pale pink in colour. It is native to Europe, North Africa and the
temperate regions of Asia. It has also become naturalised in other parts
of the world, such as Australia and North America.
